Why We're Here

It all began in 2009 when one of our founders started a new job in a very corporate, buttoned-up environment.  No longer able to dress casually, he was forced to shave daily with expensive disposable razors and wear a collared shirt and tie.  He quickly found this laborious routine caused irritation along the neck area (and to his wallet) and something had to be done.  After some investigation online and talking to shaving experts, he discovered the answer wasn’t using a multi-blade system like Mach 3’s or Fusion razors found in your local drug store.  The more effective, affordable option is a better functioning single blade system - safety razors and straight razors - and higher quality shaving creams.  Shortly thereafter, the Mach 3 razor and Barbasol cream were out of the medicine cabinet and replaced with a safety razor and cream.  He quickly found this new shaving system to significantly reduce skin irritation and to be surprisingly enjoyable.  To top it all off, his shaving costs were reduced dramatically given the new replacement blades for a single blade system cost only $8 a year vs. $180 with multi blade systems.  Having seen the benefits of this new shaving method first hand, the website www.customshaving.com was created in an effort to help other men enjoy the pleasures of shaving.

Why It Works

Multi blade shaving system has two major inherent flaws that lead to an unpleasant - and expensive - shaving experience.  The first issue is that the very first blade in a multi blade system dulls more quickly than the subsequent blades because it does the majority of the heavy cutting since it's the first to make contact with the hair and skin.  Since the first blade becomes too dull for use after 4 – 5 shaves and most men push their blade life well beyond this limit, the majority of men find themselves dragging a dull blade over their skin causing irritation and cuts.  The second flaw with the multi blade system is that after the first blade cuts the hair the subsequent blades have a tendency to direct hair downward back into the skin resulting in ingrown hairs.  Switching to a single, and less expensive, blade system will allow you to change your blades every 4 – 5 days so that you’re always using a sharp blade resulting in less ingrown hairs, less irritation and a more affordable and enjoyable shave.
